How to Find and Apply for Online Library Cards

You don't always have to drive down to a branch to submit a local library card application. Getting a library card online is actually the fastest way to add millions of free books right to your Libby app.
There are 820+ libraries across 46 states that let you apply for a free online library card right now, and ReciproCard is the only place that actually tracks them all in one spot.
If you've been dealing with long hold times on Libby, adding an online library card for Libby from another system is the fastest way to fix it. Every card you add plugs a completely separate digital catalog into your app, which means more copies of popular titles and shorter waits.
How Online Library Card Signup Works
The process is pretty straightforward. You go to the library's website, fill out a short online application with your name and address, and they issue you a digital card number. Some libraries give you the number instantly on screen. Others email it to you within a few hours.
Once you have the card number, you open Libby, tap "Add A Library," search for the library by name, and enter your new card. That's it. You now have access to their full ebook, audiobook, and magazine collection.

Instant Cards vs. Temporary Cards
Not all online signups work the same way. There are often two types you'll run into:
Instant access cards
This is typically what you'll see. You apply online, get your card number immediately or within a few hours, and you're borrowing on Libby the same day. No follow-up needed.
Temporary cards
Some libraries let you apply online, but only give you a temporary card, usually valid for around 30 days. After that, they ask you to visit a branch in person to verify your identity and make the card permanent. When this is the case, I've done my best to categorize these in the "Visit Branch" section.
But! Thanks to input from libraries and the community we've identified some libraries where you can verify your account by phone or email instead of visiting a branch. When that's possible, you'll see a pro-tip within your ReciproCard search result with exact instructions to fully activate your card. No unnecessary trips.
When you search on ReciproCard, every result in the "Apply Online For Card" section links directly to that library's signup page. You don't have to dig around their website trying to find the application form.
Why Multiple Library Cards Matter on Libby
If you're only using one library card on Libby, you're only seeing one catalog. That catalog has a fixed number of copies of every book. When a book is popular, everyone with that same card is in the same hold line.
Adding a second or third free library card from a different library system gives you access to a completely separate pool of copies. The popular book that has a 14-week hold at your home library might be available right now at another system.
This is why stacking free online library cards is the single best thing you can do if you're frustrated with Libby wait times. More cards means more catalogs, more copies, and shorter waits.
How to Find Your Online Cards
- Go to ReciproCard
- Enter your home library in the search bar
- Scroll to the "Apply Online For Card" section
- Click the signup link for any library listed
- Fill out their online application
- Receive your new library card number
How to Add Them To Libby
- Open Libby
- Tap the Menu button at the bottom of the screen
- Tap Add Library
- Search for the library you just found online
- Select the library, tap Sign In With My Card, and enter your new card number and PIN
It takes about five minutes per card, and you can do it all from your couch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use multiple library cards on Libby? Yes! Libby is designed to handle multiple cards at once, allowing you to search across all your collections at the exact same time. If you live in a state with a lot of reciprocal agreements or if you add non-resident and free options, you could easily end up linking 5, 10, or even 15 cards to hunt down the shortest wait times.
Do online library cards give me full access? Yes. ReciproCard only shows options that give you access to Libby. A new card you see in the results gives you the same Libby access as a card you get in person. Full catalog, same borrowing limits.
Do I need to renew these cards? It depends on the library. Some are permanent as long as you keep your home library card active. Others need annual renewal. Check with each library when you sign up.
What if my state isn't one of the 14 with statewide cards? You can still qualify for online cards through local and regional reciprocal agreements. Enter your home library in ReciproCard and you'll see everything available to you, not just statewide programs.
What if there are no results in ReciproCard when I search my home library? First off, I'm sorry if I wasn't able to find any agreements associated with your home library. Not all libraries and states have agreements in place. I've done my best to find as many as possible. But you're not out of luck.
