What is ReciproCard?

ReciproCard is a discovery engine that helps you figure out exactly how many library cards you qualify for. By mapping overlapping networks and reciprocal agreements across the country, we help you get more library cards so you can skip the wait for popular titles and unlock more free ebooks and audiobooks on the Libby app.

Wait, I can have more than one library card on Libby?

Yes! You can add multiple library cards to your Libby app, and using more than one library card can help reduce wait times by giving you access to more copies across different collections.

How does the search work?

Simply select your home library from the search bar. We instantly scan a database of over 8,500 library systems to find additional library cards you may be eligible for, including reciprocal agreements, statewide networks, and non-resident options.

Why use ReciproCard instead of just searching in the Libby app?

The Libby app has a great search feature and helps you find nearby libraries, but it doesn't explain the eligibility rules or reciprocal agreements that determine who can actually get a card there.

ReciproCard searches based on eligibility tied to your home library. Because of statewide systems, reciprocal agreements, and partner networks, you may qualify for library cards far beyond the buildings closest to you. ReciproCard helps surface those options and shows you how to apply.

This can be especially helpful if you're trying to reduce long hold times in Libby by expanding the number of libraries you can borrow from.

How do multiple library cards actually shorten my wait times?

When you search for a title in the Libby app, it automatically scans the digital catalogs of every library card you have linked to your account. If your home library has a six-month waitlist for a popular new release, but one of your reciprocal library cards has an available copy, Libby lets you skip the line and borrow it immediately!

Do I need a library card to use ReciproCard?

Yes. This tool is designed as a discovery engine for readers who already have a local library card connected to the Libby app. ReciproCard uses your home library to find out where else you are eligible to apply. If you don't have a library card yet, find your closest local public library, sign up for a free card, and download Libby. Once your local card is set up, come back here to find even more!

Why does the banner say "We hid redundant libraries"?

In many states, multiple library branches pool their resources into a single shared digital catalog. Getting another card from the same consortium won't actually give you access to new books. To save you time, ReciproCard uses a smart Redundancy Filter. If a library shares the exact same Libby collection you already have access to, we automatically hide it. We only show you results that will actually expand your borrowing options.

What do the color-coded categories mean?

• Use Your Current Card — These catalogs are partnered with your home library. You don't need a new application—just log in directly on the Libby app using your current card.
• Apply Online For a Card — We found a reciprocal agreement here! You can sign up online for access to their digital catalog.
• Visit Branch to Apply — We found a reciprocal agreement here! You qualify for a free card, but you'll need to visit a branch in person with your ID to apply.
• No Identified Agreements — We haven't found any reciprocal agreements here. Click "suggest an edit" if we missed one.
• Buy a Non-Resident Library Card — These are libraries that offer nationwide access to their large premium catalogs for an annual non-resident fee.

What should I do if a library shows "No Identified Agreements"?

If a library shows No Identified Agreements, it means we haven't found a confirmed reciprocal agreement for them yet. While we've done our best to map out agreements in every state, there are definitely more out there waiting to be discovered. If you know of one we missed, please click Suggest an Edit on the card so we can verify it and update the database for the rest of the community.

Why do some results have a "+ locations" dropdown menu?

When multiple libraries share the exact same digital catalog, you only need to get a card from one of them. Instead of cluttering your screen with identical results, we group them together into a single card. You can use the dropdown menu to find the specific branch that is closest to your home library.

I found a new library card. How do I actually get the books?

Once you've used the links here to sign up for a new card (or discovered a Partner library you can already use), the next step is to add it to Libby:

1. Open the Libby app on your phone or tablet.
2. Tap the Menu (the three horizontal lines in the bottom bar).
3. Tap "Add Library" and search for the name of the library you just found.
4. Enter your new card number (or your home card if it's a Partner library).

Now Libby will search all your libraries at once when you look for a book, helping you find the shortest wait time across multiple library cards.

Can I send these books to my Kindle?

Yes. Once the library is added to Libby, you can borrow an ebook and select "Read With Kindle." This will take you to Amazon to verify your device, and the book will show up on your Kindle just like any other purchase.

I clicked a link and it's broken, or the library told me I don't qualify. Why?

Library policies change frequently. Sometimes a library ends a reciprocal agreement, changes their non-resident rules, or updates their website. If you hit a dead end or successfully verify a new card, please click Suggest an Edit on the card. ReciproCard relies on community testing to keep the database accurate for everyone!

Can I suggest a library or a reciprocal agreement that you missed?

Absolutely. If you know of a hidden hub, a regional pact, or a new statewide card that isn't showing up, please use the Contact page to let us know. This project works best when readers help keep it updated.

How do paid non-resident library cards work?

Some of the largest library systems in the country allow anyone in the U.S. to buy an out-of-state library card for an annual non-resident fee. If you are an avid reader, paying a flat yearly fee to unlock a massive premium catalog of ebooks and audiobooks is often much cheaper than a monthly subscription to audiobook or e-reader services.
